NSBE Jr. needs Volunteers
NSBE Detroit Professionals,
The NSBE chapter at Lawrence Tech University is launching their own NSBE Jr. program on February 6th. This Saturday, January 30th (10:30 am to 1:00 pm), the LTU students will be doing a practice run of the program, and they are looking for volunteers to help. The run through will take place on the LTU campus. If you are interested in volunteering this Saturday, or if you would like to help out with the actual program on a weekly basis, contact Mashia Kellum (ltu.nsbe.president@gmail.com) or Ivoire Morrell (ltu.nsbe.pcichair@gmail.com).
Below is the link to volunteer for the NSBE Jr. chapter. Remember that this is a semester long commitment on Saturdays starting February 6th, 2016. On January 30th, 2016 we will be doing a run through of the first half of the activities so that we know how much supplies we need and how long it will take us.
We only need 10 volunteers and half of those must be LTU-NSBE members. It would be awesome if the other half is from the NSBE Detroit Professional Chapter.

FIRST Robotics Competition Southfield District Event seeking judges on March 4 – 5
Greetings Colleagues & Future FRC Judges,
As someone who has either participated or expressed interest in judging at a FIRST event in the past, or someone that I just think would be great at inspiring society’s next generation of engineers and scientists, I am contacting you to determine your willingness and availability to volunteer as a judge at the FIRST Robotics Competition Southfield District Event at Southfield High School on March 4 ~ 5.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) seeks to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes. The FIRST Robotics Competition involves teams of high school students designing, building and operating their own robot that competes in a game challenge. Information on this year’s game challenge, “FIRST STRONGHOLD,” is available at: http://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/welcome-to-first-stronghold.
As a judge, you will interview team representatives to determine their eligibility for a number of different awards based either on team or machine attributes. When final teams are selected, you will be asked to prepare an award script and participate in the awards ceremony at the end of the competition. Judges are required to be available from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
If you could, please let me know if you would be available to participate this year. If you are interested in volunteering, I would also ask you to sign up for the event using the US FIRST Volunteer Information Management System portal at: https://my.usfirst.org/FIRSTPortal/Login/VIMS_Login.aspx.

Mentors for the Future Cities Program
Three Detroit Future City school teams + their teacher-champions need Engineer Mentors. How great would it be if we could have a few NSBE volunteers be those mentors? These kids are already working so hard on their cities under the national theme of “Feeding Future Cities: Urban Agriculture.”
You can mentor individually, or tag-team. Future City is a middle school STEM outreach program where students design their city of the future. This city is complete with infrastructure: including transportation, communication systems, power plants, safety systems, water systems, and green spaces. Students utilize SimCity™ software to build their virtual city. They create a scale model, write an essay, and finally, make a presentation to a panel of judges.
As these students address important issues such as accessibility, sustainability, pollution, population density, water resources, traffic flow, and budgets, they develop important competencies. They receive input from both their teacher and mentors while going through the program management process, and benchmarking. They work as a team, develop their problem-solving abilities, learn how to conduct research, and perfect their presentation skills… all tools they need in the real world.
The competition is scheduled for Monday, January 26, at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. These kids deserve to attend the final competition. They need to “complete” before they “compete.” There are a multitude of awards that they have the opportunity to win, aside from 1st-5th place.
